Video Bitrate Calculator

Calculate the exact bitrate settings needed to fit your video into a specific file size limit (e.g., for Discord, WeChat, or Email).

1. Video Duration
2. Target File Size
3. Audio Quality
Current: 192 kbps
TARGET VIDEO BITRATE

1,206 kbps

Enter this value in your video editor's export settings (VBR 1-pass or CBR).

(approx. 1.2 Mbps)
Too complicated?

Manually calculating bitrate is tedious. Medrea handles this automatically.

Just select your desired resolution (e.g., 1080p), and Medrea intelligently applies the optimal bitrate using hardware acceleration to minimize file size.

Everything You Need to Know About Video Bitrate

Video bitrate is the amount of data processed per second of video. It is typically measured in kbps (kilobits per second) or Mbps (megabits per second). Understanding how to calculate it is the key to balancing video quality and file size.

The Golden Formula

The relationship between file size, duration, and bitrate is simple:

File Size (MB) = [Bitrate (kbps) × Duration (s)] / 8192

To get the target bitrate, we reverse it: Bitrate = (File Size × 8192) / Duration. Our calculator automatically subtracts the audio bitrate (usually 128-320kbps) to give you the most accurate setting for your video encoder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does resolution affect file size?

Indirectly, yes. While bitrate is the primary driver of file size, higher resolutions (like 4K) require a higher bitrate to look "good." If you use a very low bitrate on a 4K video, the file will be small but look extremely blurry (compression artifacts).

What is the difference between CBR and VBR?

CBR (Constant Bitrate) maintains the same bitrate throughout the video. It's predictable but inefficient. VBR (Variable Bitrate) uses more data for complex scenes (action) and less for simple ones (talking head), resulting in better quality at the same average file size.

How can I compress video without doing the math?

If you find bitrates confusing, use Medrea. It uses intelligent "Auto Mode" presets that automatically pick the best bitrate for your chosen resolution, ensuring the perfect balance between quality and storage space.
